With three decades of proven performance, Trotech Tanks & Vessels has consistently demonstrated unmatched resilience and influence in the engineering sector. Since 1993, the company has evolved from modest origins into a trusted leader in the design, procurement, and construction of bulk storage tanks, contributing significantly to the development of petrochemical and energy infrastructure throughout Africa.

A Legacy of Excellence

Celebrating over 30 years in operation, Trotech’s journey is marked by a commitment to quality and innovation. The company’s expertise encompasses engineering, drafting, quality control, and inspection capabilities, along with specialised resources in hydraulic jacking and boilermaking. These competencies have enabled Trotech to construct new tanks and refurbish existing ones to meet international standards such as API 650, API 653, API 620, and EN 14015.

In 2021, Trotech’s strategic acquisition by M&D Construction Group further solidified its position in the industry. Operating as a stand-alone entity within the group, Trotech benefits from enhanced efficiencies and value delivery to clients, while continuing to uphold its legacy of excellence.

Pioneering Innovations

Trotech’s commitment to innovation is exemplified by its adoption of the Tank Jacking construction method. This technique involves building tanks at ground level and incrementally jacking them to their final height, significantly enhancing safety and efficiency. By minimising the need for scaffolding and reducing exposure to working at heights, this method has set new benchmarks in tank construction safety and quality.

Additionally, Trotech employs advanced semi-automatic welding technologies, ensuring consistent weld quality and reducing construction timelines. The integration of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) scanning for non-destructive examination of tank floors further underscores the company’s dedication to leveraging cutting-edge technologies in its operations.

Landmark Projects and Partnerships

Trotech’s portfolio boasts several high-profile projects that underscore its industry leadership. Notably, the company constructed 10 new tanks with a combined capacity of 162,000 cubic meters at the Vopak Terminal in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. This project not only expanded Vopak’s storage capabilities but also reinforced Trotech’s reputation for delivering large-scale projects with precision and reliability .

In collaboration with Bidvest Tank Terminals (BTT), Trotech completed the simultaneous construction of 18 bulk storage tanks at BTT’s Richards Bay facility. This ambitious project, executed between August 2023 and May 2024, demonstrated Trotech’s capacity to manage complex, large-scale endeavors efficiently.

Managing Director, Ralph Wilson highlighted Trotech’s achievement in constructing 18 bulk storage tanks for Bidvest Tank Terminals (BTT) in Richards Bay:
“Notably, this was the first time that we were tasked with building 18 bulk storage tanks simultaneously. Achieving this impressive feat again showcases our commitment to always meeting client’s expectations and finding the best way to do so.”

Furthermore, Trotech has maintained a longstanding partnership with Astron Energy, serving as its preferred tankage refurbishment contractor for over a decade. This relationship, recently extended for an additional three years, highlights the trust and confidence major industry players place in Trotech’s capabilities.

Expanding Horizons and Leadership Insights

Trotech’s recent ventures include a significant project in Botswana, where the company is constructing four geodesic-dome tanks, each 30 meters in diameter and 23.5 meters in height, to store hydrocarbon products. Two of these tanks feature internal floating blankets to minimize vapor space and reduce evaporation losses. This project not only showcases Trotech’s technical prowess but also its commitment to local economic development, with approximately 75% of the workforce sourced from the local community.

Trotech’s success is attributed to its visionary leadership and dedicated workforce.

Lukas Brink – Managing Director, Trotech (Pty) Ltd. In a LinkedIn post from April 2025, Lukas Brink discussed Trotech’s innovative tank jacking construction method:
“Always at the cutting edge of innovation and technology in our industry, TROTECH ensures the highest standards of serviceability and reliability in bulk tank construction. A case point is our innovative jacking construction method, which provides a highly efficient and safe approach to erect, repair and enlarge bulk tank infrastructure.”

Commitment to Community and Looking ahead

The company’s “Khula Nathi” initiative, meaning “Grow with Us,” reflects its dedication to uplifting local communities through job creation and skills development. By sourcing labor locally and providing training opportunities, Trotech fosters economic growth and social empowerment in the regions where it operates.

As Trotech Tanks & Vessels continues to chart its course in the African industrial landscape, they stands poised to shape the continent’s infrastructure for generations to come.
