A Legacy Built on Vision and Strength. Few stories in African business carry the weight and legacy of Basil Read. Since its early beginnings in 1952, the company has grown into a powerhouse in the construction and engineering industries, playing a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s infrastructure and built environment. This article delves into Basil Read’s remarkable journey over the past decade, highlighting its notable achievements, growth trajectories, current projects, historical milestones, and the profound influence it has exerted on the industry.

A Legacy Forged in Resilience

Basil Leonard Read founded the company in 1952, laying the groundwork for what would become a cornerstone of South Africa’s construction industry. The company’s early years were characterised by a commitment to excellence and a vision for infrastructural development. This vision propelled Basil Read to secure its first major road contract in 1962, constructing a road from Zeerust to the Cape border, a project valued at over R1 million—a substantial sum at the time.

The company’s trajectory of growth and innovation led to its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 1987, with 3.5 million shares at 175 cents each. Notably, 60% of the company’s share capital was held by employees at all levels, a progressive stance that underscored Basil Read’s commitment to inclusive growth.

The Business Rescue Phase

The past decade has been a testament to Basil Read’s resilience and adaptability. In June 2018, the company faced significant financial challenges, leading to a voluntary business rescue process. This period was marked by strategic restructuring aimed at stabilising operations and ensuring the company’s long-term viability. The business rescue practitioners implemented measures to streamline operations, reduce overheads, and focus on core competencies.
Despite these efforts, the journey was fraught with complexities. Delays in returning construction guarantees and finalising claims hindered the company’s ability to exit the business rescue process promptly.

In an interview, CEO Khathutshelo ‘K2’ Mapasa emphasised the company’s commitment to resolving these issues to pave the way for a sustainable future.

In a 2023 interview, CEO Khathutshelo ‘K2’ Mapasa expressed his frustration towards the delays in returning construction guarantees and finalising claims, stating,

“The delays with the return of the guarantees have been caused by poor administration by some clients. Our journey has been one of learning and adaptation. The challenges we’ve faced have only strengthened our resolve to emerge stronger and more focused.”

Notable Achievements and Milestones

Throughout its history, Basil Read has been instrumental in several landmark projects that have shaped South Africa’s infrastructure:

  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital Revitalisation (2005): Basil Read played a pivotal role in the refurbishment of one of the world’s largest hospitals, enhancing healthcare delivery to millions.
