Championing Skills Development and Training

Recognising the critical need for a skilled workforce, SEIFSA has been a staunch advocate for artisan training and skills development. The organisation played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) system, facilitating structured training programs that have equipped thousands of artisans and apprentices with the skills necessary to excel in the industry. By 1966, approximately 28,000 artisans and 6,000 apprentices were contributing to the industry’s progress, a testament to SEIFSA’s commitment to human capital development.

Initiatives and Partnerships

SEIFSA’s strategic initiatives have been instrumental in fostering collaboration and growth within the industry. The organisation’s active participation in national dialogues on labour law, skills development, and broad-based empowerment has facilitated progressive changes in business practices. Notably, SEIFSA and industry trade unions played a pivotal role in restructuring bargaining processes, moving from confrontational stances to collaborative negotiations, leading to landmark agreements such as a two-year wage deal and the introduction of a 40-hour workweek.

Looking Ahead. A Vision For the Future

As SEIFSA reflects on its achievements, the organisation remains focused on the future. With ongoing initiatives aimed at re-industrialisation and economic development, SEIFSA continues to advocate for policies that support the growth and competitiveness of the metals and engineering sector. The organisation’s commitment to innovation, skills development, and industry collaboration positions it as a cornerstone in the continued advancement of Africa’s industrial landscape.

Recent Perspectives From SEIFSA Leadership

Lucio Trentini, SEIFSA’s Chief Executive Officer, speaks on collaboration between government and industry:

Elias Monage, SEIFSA’s President, emphasised the importance of addressing issues in electricity supply, water, freight logistics, crime, and visa administration, stating,

“These are the elementary elements of a viable economy.”

SEIFSA’s journey is a testament to unwavering commitment to the metals and engineering sector. The past decade has presented numerous challenges, including economic downturns, global crises, and technological disruptions. SEIFSA’s proactive approach in addressing these challenges has been commendable. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation facilitated a historic standstill agreement in 2020, freezing wages to mitigate the pandemic’s impact on the sector.

Through strategic initiatives, advocacy, and a focus on excellence, SEIFSA has not only navigated the complexities of a changing industry landscape but has also been instrumental in shaping its future. SEIFSA’s efforts in promoting broad-based black economic empowerment and its commitment to corporate social responsibility have further solidified its role as a leader in the industry.
In its dedication to celebrating outstanding achievements within the industry, SEIFSA established the SEIFSA Awards for Excellence. These awards honor companies and individuals who have demonstrated exceptional performance, innovation, and contribution to the sector.

As the organisation continues to evolve, its dedication to fostering a thriving, sustainable, and innovative industry remains steadfast, ensuring that the metals and engineering sector in Southern Africa continues to flourish in the years to come. With a clear vision for the future, SEIFSA is not only preserving the legacy of the metals and engineering industry but also actively shaping its evolution.
