Across Africa’s evolving retail sector, Woolworths Holdings Limited (WHL) has distinguished itself through its resilience, forward-thinking approach, and strong commitment to sustainability. From its founding in 1931 to its rise as a prominent multinational brand, WHL’s growth reflects a clear strategic vision and a steadfast pursuit of excellence.

A Legacy Rooted in Quality and Innovation

Founded by Max Sonnenberg in Cape Town, WHL began as a single store and has since evolved into a conglomerate encompassing Woolworths South Africa, Country Road Group in Australia, and Woolworths Financial Services. The company’s expansion across 11 African countries and its significant presence in Australia and New Zealand underscore its global ambitions and adaptability.

Navigating Challenges with Strategic Acumen

Despite facing economic headwinds, For the 53 weeks ended June 30, 2024, WHL reported turnover and concession sales of R76.4 billion. The adjusted operating profit was R3.3 billion, with an improved operating profit margin of 7.1%. These figures reflect the company’s robust business model and its ability to adapt to changing market conditions.

However, the first half of the 2025 fiscal year presented challenges, with WHL anticipating a potential reduction of up to 27% in profit margins, primarily due to decreased earnings from its clothing divisions across South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. This underscores the importance of diversification and innovation in sustaining growth.
