Historical Overview

Established in 1999 as a public company under the Republic of South Africa Nuclear Energy Act, Necsa’s roots trace back to the Atomic Energy Board (AEB) formed in 1948. This evolution reflects South Africa’s commitment to harnessing nuclear technology for peaceful and developmental purposes. The construction of the National Nuclear Research Centre, including the SAFARI-1 Research Reactor in the early 1960s, marked a pivotal moment in the nation’s nuclear journey.

Achievements and Milestones

The past decade has been transformative for Necsa, characterised by strategic initiatives and groundbreaking accomplishments such as:

  • Advancements in Nuclear Medicine: Necsa, through its subsidiary NTP Radioisotopes SOC Ltd, has been at the forefront of producing medical isotopes, notably Molybdenum-99, essential for diagnostic imaging and cancer treatment globally. This contribution has positioned South Africa as a key player in the international nuclear medicine arena.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Necsa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ASP Isotopes Inc. to accelerate the construction of an advanced nuclear fuel facility. This collaboration underscores Necsa’s commitment to innovation and expanding its technological capabilities.
  • Leadership and Governance: Under the stewardship of Group CEO Mr. Loyiso Tyabashe, appointed in January 2021, Necsa has experienced stabilisation and a return to profitability. Mr. Tyabashe, a professional engineer with over two decades of experience in the nuclear sector, has been instrumental in steering the organisation towards sustainable growth.

Current Projects and Initiatives

  • Multi-Purpose Research Reactor (MPR): With Cabinet approval secured, Necsa is set to develop the MPR, intended to replace the aging SAFARI-1 reactor. This project aims to ensure the continuity of South Africa’s nuclear research and isotope production capabilities.
  • Research and Innovation: Necsa continues to invest in applied radiation and chemistry research, contributing to advancements in nuclear science and its applications across various industries. The organisation’s commitment to research is evident in its state-of-the-art laboratories and ongoing projects aimed at technological development.

Our partnership with ASP Isotopes Inc. will enable us to accelerate the construction of an advanced nuclear fuel facility, positioning South Africa at the forefront of nuclear technology.”

Necsa’s journey over the past decade is a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence and contribution to society. Through strategic initiatives, leadership, and a focus on research and development, Necsa has not only achieved remarkable business success but has also played a crucial role in advancing the nuclear industry in Africa.
